ahpoke Songs that calm the savage beast (or alien), this is what Macross is all about. In the 2059, in an effort to preserve mankind’s culture, humanity has scattered across the galaxy to find hospitable planets to colonize. After resolving their conflict with the giant alien race the Zentradi making peace through the sharing of music and culture, the human race becomes embroiled in yet another conflict with an alien race.
When an entire colony fleet suddenly disappears the government turns a blind eye to the disaster and deems it an accident. The focus then shifts to Frontier, another colony fleet seeking a habitable planet for its residents. Here we find the galaxy’s top star, Sheryl Nome, who has arrived in the colony to perform, only for her concert to be interrupted by and attack from an unknown alien in the vicinity. Coming to the colony’s rescue is SMS, a civilian military organization that aids in the defense of the colony. When one of the SMS pilots is killed in battle he is replaced by a young pilot in training Alto Saotome. Alto valiantly uses the fallen pilots Variable Fighter to rescue Ranka Lee, the moe moe kyun singing sensation that will overtake Sheryl as the ruler of the idol galaxy. These three fall into a love triangle, as both Ranka and Sheryl vie for Alto's heart, in different ways. This romantic plot is only one thread in a tapestry of politics, mystery, and drama as the secrets of the new alien threat and the fate of the missing colony fleet are explored by Alto and the SMS.
Though the manga is not completely scanlated, it’s still a good series to follow as the plot is thick and rather sound. If waiting for the storyline isn’t what you like, then watch the anime, as the anime is complete and in fact awaiting a movie version of it. Fans of its predecessor, Macross Zero would definitely want to follow the series. All in all, even if you hate the storyline, you’ll probably love the way the characters are drawn, whether you’re drawn to the cuteness or the prettiness or even the action part of it, it’s still a great read.
