Manga of the Week: Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann by Kotaro Mori

This week, our manga spotlight has shined upon Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. If you are unfamiliar with this manga be sure to check it out!

Series Summary:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann takes place in a fictional far future where human beings have been forced underground and thrive in isolated subterranean civilizations. These "villages" have no contact with the surface world nor other villages. Since frequent earthquakes damage infrastructure, the villages must constantly expand deeper into the earth. Individuals designated to this task are known as "diggers". Jiiha Village is the home of Simon, a fourteen year old digger who was orphaned when his parents were killed in an earthquake. He is respected by the village elder as the best of the diggers, but is ostracized by his peers. After discovering a special drill key deep in the ground, he is recruited by an eccentric fellow orphan named Kamina into his group, the "Gurren Brigade". Kamina dreams of the surface world, which he visited as a child with his father but had to return home because he was too weak to survive.

Review: - by ahpoke

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, quite a mouthful of a title, but yet the humor in it is unmistakable. The story focus mainly on exploits of the Gurren Brigade (think SOS-dan + GAR), where their manly and fearless leader Kamina, seeks to reach the surface world, in a village who has never seen the sun. Throughout these exploits, he recruits the village’s top digger and fellow orphan, Simon, who becomes his sworn brother and the brigade’s key to fulfilling their group’s goals.

The story, set in an underground village under siege by a Ganmen (Gundam Face with miniature arms and legs), and as the roof of the village finally crumbles, the surface is finally revealed to Kamina. Joining this assaulting Ganmen in the decent into the village, is Yoko, a busty teenager with a big gun as well. As she fights the Ganmen, Kamina tries to assist her, but both of them end up being saved by Simon who then shows them the Ganmen he found while digging. Using the newly found Ganmen, both Kamina and Simon defeat the intruding enemy and finally get a taste of the surface world when they get blow skywards.

As they crash, Yoko’s allies finally join up with them and thus began the adventures of the two men Gurren Brigade. As the story progresses, Kamina manages to steal another Ganmen from the viscous Beastman, a feat which is replicated by many others, adding to the number of the Gurren Brigade. Kamina then surpasses his father, who had left for the surface world when he was still a child, as he survives in the harsher surface world.

Simon, as the ever loyal sidekick to Kamina, still manages a crush on Yoko, who in turn has a soft spot for Kamina, thus introducing a dash of romance to the series. There are also many other elements that are added to the story as it progresses, which isn’t your run of the mill action comedy.

The series is widely popular, especially seen as an epic series with lots of GAR action yet has that ecchiness that appeals to the more mature males. If you liked Gundam, Guns, Ecchi, this is the series for you! So go check it out now!

Can’t wait to find out what happens next? The anime has already completed itself! So u can catch it too! Why not? You can’t get enough of the epicness of  Gurren Lagann!

Even after watching the anime and reading the manga, there’s more! There’s still the spinoffs to read, in this series, even the spinoffs are good, all the ingredients of one are in the other, so you’ll probably like the rest if you liked the original.

gurren lagann doesn't deserve the media exposure it gets, and it makes me sad you people actualy sold out so much. over the past few weeks there have been spotlights on a few mass media mangas that don't deserve it at all.
i think the whole point of the spotlight is to bring up unique and interesting mangas that not many people were aware of, not glorify the popular series that already are too well known, and not because of their storytelling or art. what's gonna be next? bleach? naruto? come on...

TTGL is simple, fun and engaging meaningless fun with no pretention of trying to be anything else. So much, in fact, that it manages to not only give you such a major amount of laughs, but the ending is one of the biggest gutpunches I've ever come across.

It doesn't cater to everyone, of course, but if you're into simple, unpretentious fun, then TTGL is your cup of tea.

dude (or whatever ur really are), we do manga reviews on more popular mangas, why? because firstly we have to read them ourselves before we're able to do a review. Obviously we ourselves have read the more popular mangas, however as i have done before, i have reviewed a less know manga (read back the old news). however recently i've begun to tie in my reviews with my photography, and i can assure u, people cosplay those from the more popular mangas.

its not like we always want to review popular mangas, i assure u, that we at mangatraders arent so shallow. In fact we have opened the reviews to allow users to submit to us their own reviews, however none at all have done so.

I personally have a few cosplayer whom i know, who are going to do some lesser known mangas in the coming mths, thus when i actually get the photos done, i'll tie it in with the review.

of course in the next few series that are going to be reviewed may or may not be those popular series, its all on a whim.

in closing, plz appreciate the stuff that we, the staff/helpers of mangatraders do for the site, even if u dont like it.

To add to what ahpoke wrote, if you don't like it, review a manga, send the review to me. I'll take a look at it, clean it up, and post it for you.

there are only so many mangas that are being cosplayed, and most (if not all) have animes - meaning that they are already popular on their own. there is no need to shine the spotlight on them, they already have it and will have it for quite some time.

i'm not talking about TTGL's appeal to people, i mean all the shallow mainstream works in genral. i appriciated most of the spotlights you've done in the past untill the current flow (the not-so-known mangas were still good), even if they didn't suit my personal tastes. you didn't have to like the genre to see the creator's love for their manga in them. you'd rarely see something like that in mainstream works. all the uniqueness sips out, if they ever had anything like that in the first place.

then heres a suggestion, write ur own review and show it to us, it might be the next SoTW, if nt i really rather u STFU

on a side note, u say ur not talking abt TTGL then why mention the name in ur previous post or posting here in the first place =.= u could go the the shallow manga discussion thread or open one if u wanted, thats the freedom given here in mangatraders

we the staff cant read every unknown manga out there, its not like i wanted to review some known manga. notice how we're mostly reviewing mangas that appeal to guys, why? because the staff reviewing the mangas are both guys, oh how we would love to have a female do a review on a shoujo manga just for fun and variety

i wanted to review the breaker, samurai X, fairy tail, gintama, ubel blatt, parallel, soul eater yada yada yada (*rants abt the other manga he likes*), but it was done already =.= so ~.~? too bad, i wanted to do alot of things as well, but life isnt all roses.

FYI: so many other popular mangas has already been done =.= why didnt u make ur complaint then

maybe im just abit oversensitive but i feel its my reviews that seem to be drawing flak =.=

i might as well rant abt the previous times too =.=

Pika7power: STFU man, theres evidence that ur wrong, though im glad after being shown that evidence u really did STFU and stop trying to argue ur way

mist, toasted: STFU abt the ratings, its my personal opinion and its a neutral style of opinion , im nt one to rate something highly just because i read it or fanboy over it.

MsSaku: I wish u would not come out with baseless accusations abt where im from, or comment how i choose to call certain types of people

sigh maybe STFU is  gonna be my catchphrase soon =.=

READ plz
i said i was not talking about TTGL's APPEAL or it SPECIFICALLY. but it IS one in a genre of shallow mainstream. and since more and more such series get the spotlight lately, this one was just the straw that broke the cammel's back. i had to say something. should i have posted a comment on each and every one of them? i'm not that bored, i have a life.
i dislike forums and i didn't want to start a 10 page disccussion about it. i just wanted to sound my oppinion as one of the old members of MT and end it at that. but getting a "RAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGE STFU GTFO" reply of a staff member is very strange. it's hard to believe you're 20... grow up
