What is Mangatraders?

----------

DF- The Official About us page on the main site has this but to repeat:

Mangatraders.com is site dedicated to making English translated manga available to the world. It was founded by Aftershock, who wanted to give something back to the manga community by providing a simple, effective way for people to obtain translated manga for free. In the past it was difficult for a person to find different manga series as they were spread all over the net. The goal of mangatraders is to bring all translated manga together in one place so people can find what ever they are looking for in one location.

Initially mangatraders was a glorified dumping ground. The few staff members added whatever manga they saw fit to share and users would come and download them. But as time wore on and more and more manga became popular it was decided that the staff alone was not sufficient to obtain and upload all the titles available or desired. Thus the site was reformed into a true trading center. In order to live up to the title of traders, as well as take slack off of the staff, it was decided that any user would be allowed to upload any manga they wished as long as it was translated into English. In this way mangatraders has grown as more and more as rare or obscure manga are brought to us by users from all over the world.

By allowing users to share their manga every user of the site is exposed to nearly everything the world of manga has to offer. With the addition of forums people can talk about the manga's they obtain from the site and offer suggestion to one another about what may interest each other.

Who are the Staff?

----------

DF- The Staff are made up of 3 different positions or status.

There are the Admins, These are the guys that do the major changes to the site like design, coding, Forum administration. This does include also the Founders. These are the guys you don't talk to with your little issues as they mostly have better things to do (better as in bigger, not better as in your question isn't worth beans)

There are the Website Team, These staff members are those that tirelessly work on the files you see on the front page. They approve your Downloads, mange the categories and look after the Reports. These staff members the ones that know just how to answer your questions dealing with the files on our site

There are lastly the Forum Mods, These staff members look after the dealings of the forum. They make sure the posts and threads that members do follow what is set out in our forum rules. They Are also very experenced members of MT that can answer your questions almost just as well as the Website staff can.

What is it's history?

----------

DF- MT doesn't have much of a history other then being a Manga site. The first design of MT was nothing more then glorified dumping ground. It wasn't till Design two that the site began accepting files from users themselves. The Current version is taking that farther by making more of a user driven site bringing everyone together.

How to Download?

----------

DF- First you need to log-in

Once you do that you can download one of two ways you can click "manga" on our menu

and pick a series there. They are all alphabetical as well easy to navigate by using the letters at the top and pages, If for any chance you seem to not be able to find your series use the search

The other way is in your profile. If you have any manga's on watch or on your favorites list it will jump you right there.

Regardless to download you just click any of the links at the bottom of the manga page

when prompted by your browser (if at all) Save the file to anywhere you want it.

Now these files you download are called archive files, they are made by a File archiver. File archiver is a computer program that combines a number of files together into one archive file, or a series of archive files, for easier transportation or storage. To use them you get a File archiver to basically reverse the process. Your options to do so are WinRar www.rarlabs.com or 7-Zip http://www.7-zip.org/

How to Upload?

Yuki:  Please familiarize yourself with the uploading guide found here before you start uploading.
----------

DF-

First you need too log-in

Then you need to click "Upload file" in your user box on the side

You will then get to our upload page. this is where you can upload

Oneshots

Yukimura Note: You should also use the One Shot format for specially structured manga which don't fit the mold of v0x cAA-BB.  For example if a volume contains one chapter in 5 parts all indicated by letter or includes special chapters not counted with the main story you should indicate this all in the series name.

The (Oneshot) tag will be added automatically but will be removed before the file is posted to the site.  Be aware abusing this method to get around entering chapter info may be punished by loss of upload and/or download privileges.  Please don't cheat.

Chapters

or Volumes

If you are uploading the only volume of a one volume manga in its entirety then please use the Oneshot uploading type and add (Complete) to the Series Name.

After you click the button you will be asked where this file is. Make sure this file is in a zip, rar, or tar as the uploader will not accept anything else. Once you pick the file it will begin uploading showing it's status in the blue bar below.

The files will not appear on the site instantly, all files must be approved by a staff member before they are made available for download.

Why was my file deleted/rejected?

----------

Yenkaz/Yukimura

There are a number of reasons we might chose to reject a file from being activated:

- The file was already on the site (possibly under a different name, please check for alternative spelling with a site such as mangaupdates.com)
- The file had a bad filename.  Uploaded files should include the name of the manga, (an abbreviation will do if it's obvious enough), and numbers indicating chapters and/or volume.  Anything named simply vol 1.zip will be deleted without review.
- We deemed the file unsuited for sharing on MT (We do accept adult manga which may include some sexual scenes, homosexual pairings, or other mature themes, but we do not accept flat out hentai (most/all pages dedicated to depicting sex) or manga with themes we deem unacceptable.
- It was an one shot or one volume manga split into chapters, such titles should always be uploaded as one file.
- The file was a chapter, which was uploaded in the middle of a series of volumes.  For example a v03 c01 appearing when v01, v02, v04, v05 are already on the site will be deleted.
- it wasn't actually manga (American Graphic Novels are cool and all...but they aren't really manga (even if a japanese person helped create them), put them on sendspace or something and post a link in the forums if you want to share them that badly.

Reasons for a file being removed after it's been activated include:

- The file was a chapter that was replaced by a volume
- It was missing pages or whole chapters
- The file had been corrupted, and began to give away 404 errors.
- It was deemed in retrospect that we didn't want the file on the site.  We reserve the right to refuse any file we feel is inappropriate.

Can I use a download manager to speed up or pause then resume my downloads?

----------

Yukimura

For Speed: No.  Every user is allowed one connection per download server at any given time.  Download managers usually try to download files in pieces, opening multiple connections simultaneously and resuming the download at a point further ahead than where the initial connection currently is.  We view this as cheating and so the servers actively block multiple connections from forming to the same ip address.

For resuming: No (probably).  The true download urls that the links on the site resolve to are dynamically generated when a user clicks on a link and expire after a few minutes. Resuming a download is generally accomplished by reconnecting to a URL and requesting that the server start sending the file in question at some offset from the beginning of the file.  Because our download URL's are dynamically generated and expire quickly it is unlikely that attempting to resume a paused download will work properly.

For any other reason (e.g. queueing): You can try to set your download manager software to obey our one download per server at a time restrictions. The server a file is on is indicated to the left of the file by a small icon on all series pages.  However, Mangatraders does not officially support download manager software and we will not help troubleshoot download manager related issues in the official site support thread.

A note on download speeds:
Each download server has a set maximum bandwidth that it will try to distribute as evenly as possible to all users currently downloading.  If you are one of 100 people downloading off of a download server you will be able to download at up to 1/100th the maximum capacity of the server.  If there are 200 users downloading form a server each user is limited to no more than 1/200th of the maximum server capacity and so on.  Generally three download servers will carry between 100-400 concurrent downloads, while the other two will carry between 50-100.  If you happen to try and download something when you're person #400 of 400 you will get a much slower speed then if you were person #50 of 50 on a different server, that's just the way it works.

Additionally, there are several factors that will prevent a user from being able to use all the bandwidth that the server would normally reserve for them, including distance, internet service provider settings, and general internet congestion between the user and the server (people in Australia or Southeast Asia are not likely to get very high speeds no matter how few people are downloading due to the distance between them and the servers).  For this reason the server will take away some of the equally allocated bandwidth if it detects that a users connection is unable to utilize it and spread it among everyone else.

Why do I see "You have reached your connection limit for this server"?

-------

Yukimura
Getting this message means you were trying to download too many files off the same server.  We currently have 5 download servers available for all users, dl1, dl2, dl3, dl4, and dl5.  Each server allows only one connection per ip address.  What this means is that if you want to download several files at the same time you may or may not be able to depending on which server the files are on.

If one is on dl1 and another is on dl2 you can download both at the same time.  If both files are on the same server however you can't download both at the same time.

Canceling or completing a download you're already getting from that server will remove the problem.  However keep in mind that you can't click the same link more than once every 30 seconds to prevent throttling, even if you got a connection limit message when you first clicked it.

Example: You start downloading the first volume of a manga you're curious about, as it turns out this volume is on dl2.  As the volume gets going you notice a new chapter of your favorite manga has been uploaded and you click the link in your watch list.  Unfortunately for you that file was also on dl2 and so you receive a message instead of a download prompt.  You think, hmm I can only download one file at a time from dl2 so I'll cancel this volume download and get that chapter I really really want to read.  But, the five-minutes-between-clicks limit is independent of the server connection limit.  This means that even if you cancel your previous download you still aren't going to be able to attempt to download that new chapter again for another 5 minutes.

Also, it is completely random what server a particular file is on, so there's no way to try and game the system to always have 3 downloads running at the same time.

Note As I mentioned before these limits are based on ip address not user account.  For that reason if you use a proxy service, dial-up, or some other method of connecting to the internet where you share an ip address with many others it is possible that you will cross paths with another user who is downloading a file at the same time as you.  If this happens you will see the message that you are downloading from the server even if you are not.  The only thing you can do in this situation is try and wait for the other person to finish and get a download started yourself.

How do I open files from Mangatraders?

------------
Yukimura- Mangatraders hosts compressed archive files with either zip and rar compression.  Most operating system can understand zip files on their own however to open rar files an external program is usually needed.  If you do not already have any software that can understand rar files then we suggest downloading and installing 7zip.

If you don't like 7-zip there are many other programs that enable rar decompression for Windows or other platforms, a google or wikipedia search for "rar extraction" would be a good place to start looking.

Alternatively you might not want to have to unpack your files at all.  There are programs that can display the images inside of zip and rar compressed files without you even having to extract their contents.
Note: Most of these programs use simple alphabetical sorting to order the pages inside the archive and while the staff tries its best to avoid this some files on the site may not sort properly in these programs due to poor internal file structure.  In this situation the files must be extracted, the folders or pages renamed so they will sort properly, and the files compressed again for the viewer to display them properly.

Some Examples of archive viewer programs include:

------------
zraith- Any Mac users that visit and download from the site and have trouble opening and viewing files in .rar format can use one of the following programs:

Archive Extraction
Stuffit Expander - http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/ - Note that the free version only unpacks.

Archive Image Viewers

What are and how do I subscribe to RSS feeds?

------------

DF-RSS (which, in its latest format, stands for "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually. RSS content can be read using software called a "feed reader" or an "aggregator."(most Browsers are this) The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content, downloading any updates that it finds.

On our site RSS Feeds allow you in browsers that have the RSS ability to display the latest uploads in a series. This is a great tool in tracking your favorite series with out the need to even visit Mangatraders on a daily basis (course we know you will anyways). To use it on the site simply click the RSS icon next to the series name when you are viewing the series information and you are set.

Why do I get the message "Your downloads have been Throttled"?

----------

Yuki - The throttling message and download counter are both triggered based on your mouse clicks.  They do not notice if your download is slow to begin or fails or is canceled.  If your profile says you have X downloads that means you've clicked on a download links X times.  It's possible that you clicked on the same download link X times but the counter won't care.  Similarly if you click on a download link but get impatient and click again you will be informed that you tried to download the file already and will have to wait 5 minutes.

When will the next chapter/volume of [INSERT SERIES] be uploaded?

--------------------------

Yenkaz: Short answer: We don't know, MT only hosts the manga files but does not actually translate or scan them.
Not only that, but once a given file has new scans, it's a question of when one of our users will decide to upload it.

This means that asking when a given manga series is going to get updated is generally not going to yield an answer.  Unless there is news such as the manga author is on a temporary break or the manga has been dropped by all the known scan groups there's not much else you'll be able to find out about the status any scanlations on this site.

Our suggestion is to either go to scanlator's websites and ask there (which most scanlators will frown upon) or to simply wait patiently for them to release the next file (which you could then upload to mangatraders Smiley ).

Zraith:Since we don't do the scanlating we have no idea when the next chapter/volume will be released. Only the scan groups who are doing the series know when they'll release the next chapter/volume, and even then its pretty random as it depends on the people within the scan group who are doing the work. An example would be this one manga series that I'm waiting for the next release. The next to last chapter that was released was about 3 months before the last one; the last one was released approx. 7 months ago. On the other side mangas like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece are usually released about once a week. As you can see it varies for each manga series and it all depends on the scan group doing it. Finally the last variable is the user base, since this site is community driven (meaning files are uploaded by the users) doesn't necessarily mean that the file will be on the site on the same date when its been released by the scan group.

What do the stars and titles under my forum name mean?

--------

Yukimura

Your title and the number and color of your starts indicates what member group you are in.  For non staff members member groups are based on how many posts you have made.  Having 1+ posts makes you a Poster and gives you a single star, having 10+ posts makes you an Illiterate and gives you 2 stars, the ranks are set up to increase at 10, 25, 100, 500, 1000, 2500, and 5000 posts, each giving a different title and an additional star.

These are the ranks in order:
New Trader  0 Icons
Poster         1 Icon
Illiterate       2 Icons
Reader         3 Icons
Literate        4 Icons
Enthusiast     5 Icons
Articulate      6 Icons
Verbose        7 Icons
Mangaka       8 Icons

There is also a Sub Group, the MT Helpers, all of whom have 6 purple icons under their names.  MT Helpers assist the staff by doing things that anyone could do that the staff know need to be done but do not have the time to fix themselves.  MT Helpers do not have any special privileges or powers beyond that of a normal user but they have access to the staff's private information about the state of the site, and they have accepted the responsibility to try and fix things.  They are usually given assignments to fix things like improper uploads, missing or erroneous Series Information, etc.

All full staff members have 8 icons, and their color corresponds to that staff member's title.

Forum Moderator means a person works on the forums, enforcing rules and keeping things neat and clean as well as helping people find information, they have green icons.

Website Staff means a person is a moderator on the main website, approving, renaming and moving files as well as updating summaries and dealing with issues relating to files.  Website staff can also do everything Forum Moderators can do.  They have blue icons.

Administrator means a person has control over the forums and site and can change the way they actually look and function, like creating new boards for threads to go in and deciding what options are available to users.  They can also do everything Website Staff and Forum Moderators can do, in addition to promoting users to the previously mentioned positions.
